Imagine winning the lottery. Now imagine winning the lottery twice. Is it even possible to win the lottery twice? They say that lottery luck only strikes once, but this statement is far from true. Lottery organisers Camelot said it was an “extraordinary situation” that a couple won such a prize twice, as it beat odds of more than 283 billion to one.

They prefer to remain anonymous, and that’s understood: A Dublin couple collected a winning cheque of €113,661 in June 2016 after matching five numbers and the bonus in the Ireland Lotto draw. “We are getting closer and closer to the jackpot,” the husband said. “Since the start of the lotto, we have matched 5 numbers nine times and we’re not giving up on the jackpot just yet.”

Is it more than lottery luck? Standford PHD and math professor Joan Ginther had her first big win in 1993 when she shared a Lotto Texas jackpot; her winning ticket was worth US$5.4 million! This was only the start of her lottery winning journey. In 2006, she won US$2 million from a Holiday Millionaire scratch-off ticket. Just two years later she had yet another win of US$3 million from a Millions and Millions ticket. Her fourth and biggest win came in 2010 when she purchased US$50 worth of scratch-off tickets which resulted in a US$10 million win!

The 4-time winner from Texas purchased two of her winning tickets at the same shop in Bishop, Texas. Little is known about Ginther except that she apparently lives in Las Vegas and refuses to talk to the media. And then there’s Howard Rankin from Framingham, Massachusetts. Shortly after Long Island construction worker Bruce Magistro won a US$1 million New York “Extreme Cash” prize in 2012, his wife Yvonne lost a three-year battle with cancer. Much of that prize money went to pay for her medical bills.
